Why is it legal drug companies charge Americans more for drugs than they charge others in foreign countries?

Question by Sam V: Why is it legal drug companies charge Americans more for drugs than they charge others in foreign countries?
It seems that research and development that is done by US drug companies is paid for by the US citizenry. If we go to the goverment health plan, R&D will be the first to go.
