I use the phrase “in point of fact” a lot, and my boyfriend always asks what in the world that means. Obviously, I know the general meaning of the phrase, but does anyone know where it originated?

It’s a long-used English idiom and it’s been around for at least two hundred years (citations below), if not much longer.
I don’t think it’s that distinctive an idiom that anyone could be said to have “invented” it.
