Libby, a recovering alcoholic, works as a substance abuse counselor in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. Emily, one of Libby’s new client is resistant and at times argumentative with her and other group members. During group, Emily is often tearful and expresses anger when anyone asks her what the source of her emotions is. Three weeks into a six week treatment regimen, Emily expresses a desire to discontinue treatment because (announcing this in group) “This is bullshit,” and “I don’t need a bunch of whiners telling me how to lice my life!” Libby strongly cautions Emily about discontinuing her treatment prematurely, but is unsuccessful in changing her mind. Upon discharge, Emily demands a copy of all her records, including case notes from the treatment center. Libby, feeling concerned for Emily’s state of mind includes in Emily record, a letter to Emily demands a copy of all records, including a letter to Emily, outlining Libby’s attempts to work with Emily. In the letter, Libby comments about Emily’s resistance and belligerent behavir in group, staes that Emily is in denial about her condition, and expresses her hope that Emily will be more concerned with and committed to her recovery in order not to lose or damage her personal relationships (This was Libby’s experience when she was an active alcoholic). In this leter, Libby uses specific statements that Emily made in group to illustrate her concerns.
