SPCA – What do you think of them?
Question by тωιѕтє∂: SPCA – What do you think of them?
The SPCA in my area, should be ashamed. I need some tips on what me and my community can do to get a better animal shelter / rescue program put into place. I’m from Nova Scotia, Canada – and here’s the latest story about them.
The morning of Feb4th, a dog was found dead outside. The SPCA “official” believed he froze to death. The “official” commented in the paper that it’s the community’s responsibility to report suspected abuse of an animal. Well, my entire community has been reporting the abuse and neglect of this animal since the year 2006, and at least one of us made a call weekly. Every time a call was made, the SPCA would “investigate” and find nothing wrong. The dog was clearly malnourished, and has barely ever been inside of the people’s home.
I even called one day to report the neighbor was kicking his dog. The worker there asked “did you hear the dog yelp?” and I replied “No, I’m inside of my house – but I seen it” and then she replied “well, there’s nothing I can do to help” and hung up.
When you try to drop off a stray, they literally DEMAND a $ 50 donation, or they tell you they can’t take the animal. They’re quick to take unabused animals in good homes – but a poor neglected animal is stuck there.
Even adopting an animal is a hassle, if they think you’re not worthy – example : they refused to let a woman adopt a cat, because she commented on how filthy and foul the condition of the SPCA building was (and still is today).
I don’t know – what can the community do ? The SPCA says it’s our responsibility to report, but when we do, no one cares. Taking a dog by force would be simply illegal .. options people, PLEASE.
A few of us already have letters in the paper, and have been for the past 4 years. . politicians don’t care.

Write to the local paper and offer an article and expose all this. They should accept it as its public interest and papers like to expose things.
*IF* they reject you, then keep your article and post it any where you can.
Don’t forget to have credible sources, link to this report you’re quoting from (what the ‘official’ is saying or where ever you got it)
