How long is the recovery time when having a total shoulder replacement?

Question by sdmartin7809: How long is the recovery time when having a total shoulder replacement?
My father is 65 years old and injured his shoulder. The orthopedic surgeon tells him that he has torn some of his bicep and that he needs to have a total shoulder replacement done, because of his problems with arthritis on top of the injury. He is unsure if it is really worth going through the pain and recovery, plus he’s concerned that he might not gain any mobility from the surgery anyway. Anyone have any advice on their own experiences?

First of all, have him get a second opinion. Surgery is not always the best option…I have a superspinatus tear in my left bicep muscle that I have chosen not to surgically repair and I have rheumatoid and osteo arthritis. I chose not to repair it because the pain of recovery is worse than the pain not having the surgery. but you asked the recovery time after this type of surgery, that would depend on your father’s attitude, but it ranges from 8 to 12 weeks. How much pain is he in now? Would it be worth it, if surgery relieves his pain? Let him ask himself these questions before making this decision. Good Luck
