Dr. urging drug screening while pregnant?

Question by Andrea: Dr. urging drug screening while pregnant?
I went to a new OBGYN yesterday for my pregnancy. I am 15 weeks and had to switch Dr.s due to insurance. Upon arrival I filled out a questionare about the pregnancy, medications, etc. One of the questions was “In the past year have you used any of the following” and listed below was crack, cocaine, heroine, pcp, marijuana, etc. Being an HONEST patient I put down that I had used marijuana in the past year. I wanted to be sure the doctor new in case it could complicate my pregnancy. Mind you, I would smoke maybe once or twice a month BEFORE I got pregnant. My doctor says that she wants to start screening me for drugs “just in case someone trys to take my baby away.” I was completely blown away. First of all I am married, we just bought a home in preparation for our baby, my husband and I are college grads and responsible adults. I see NO reason why anyone would ever try to take our baby away, and I find it to be quite offensive that she wants to screen me for drugs just because I was honest about my drug use in the past year! I live in the state of Ohio. Is there a law that requires me to take these tests? If so, fine no problem. But I am not going to submit myself to unnecessary scrutiny for being honest. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge regarding this???
