Can someone who has an addiction change?

Question by *Butterfly*: Can someone who has an addiction change?
I need feedback from someone who has actually experinced or knows someone who went trough this problem. Can someone really stop drug and alcohol abuse with out any professional help. I know you need to want to change and this is the case. If so how did you do this what help did you use what helped??
