My Friend plays WoW and barely studies, smokes MJ, and doesn’t care about his grades…?
Question by Varejao: My Friend plays WoW and barely studies, smokes MJ, and doesn’t care about his grades…?
I have a friend in college who smokes marijuana, plays world of warcraft everyday and everytime I go to his room, and only studies and does work at the very last minute. He ends up sleeping at 5am, and drinks coffee and adderall (No he doesn’t have ADD or ADHD, he takes it because he does things at the last minute) He has low standards for his grades, despite getting a free ride to college. He looks for easy ways out of studying, such as getting “help” from past students (getting their past work, tests, etc.). This past semester he received lower grades than I know he is capable of getting and he really didn’t care. He is satisfied with only surviving the classes, and not doing his absolute best, which I know can be A’s. If he keeps this up, will he have a hard future, or is this scene typical among college students? I tried telling him not to be lazy and quit World of Warcraft, but he refuses, saying that’s not the cause. What is your opinion on this?
He came into college with a lot of credits because his high school had one of those programs where you can get college credit. Plus he is non-caucasian (I will not reveal his ethnicity because of privacy concerns), so he got a scholarship based on that. Plus the very first semester we had college together, he posted a near 4.0 GPA. He barely beat me that first semester, but now, I surpass him easily in GPA, which worries me

It depends where he is in college (is he a freshman, sophomore, etc.?) and the school itself.
Generally, once he reaches the upper levels, he will be washed out by the level of work and study time required.
If he is on scholarship and only ‘surviving through the classes’, his scholarship will be taken back due to grades. In what way is he receiving a free ride?

As I said before, there is a good chance the scholarship may be taken back if he continues posting borderline grades. As a friend, there is only so much you can do. It sounds like he needs a wake up call, but it may be hard to come across one at this point.
You could raise the question to a counselor and see what advice he or she can give. In this situation it may be best to, since the counselor will probably have seen a similar situation before.
