Why is my pain uncontrolled?

Question by Matt P: Why is my pain uncontrolled?
Why is my back pain uncontrolled?
I am prescribed 5mg/500 Vicodin and it hardly does anything. The only thing it does is put me under the influence. I just took 30mg (six pills), and and I still have the pain in my thoracic area. I also use aspercream. T7/8 vertebrae is slightly degenerated and I have mild arthritis. I attend physical therapy twice a week and do the daily exercises. Do I need a different drug to deal with the pain, its so hard to sleep. For others, one or two will do. I am not a drug abuser either, it just doesn’t want to subside. The doc said if I don’t feel relief within two months I need to see a spine specialist, what would/could they do different than an MD?

I am 20 years old, 6′ 6″ and a slim build.

I understand the effects of hydrocodone and the acetaminophen and was concerned but he said as long as I’m not taking more than 4 grams a day I’ll be fine as far as liver damage is concerned.

I had 60 prescribed mid December and they were done by new years. I had to get more a few days ago because the physical therapy wasn’t taking over like I had expected. Addiction is not present, nor should it be because the only time I take them it is at night to help me sleep and be somewhat pain free. I know I have very little tolerance to it, I just feel high and not relieved of pain, its ridiculous.

The doc said four a day is the limit since he stressed the addictiveness. I just take the four at night but this time i had to up it to see if I could get some relief, but sure enough its still present.

I take many good quality supplements. Whey protein, good calcium from coral, fish oil, DHA, vitamin C, perfect multi super greens, and some others

Thanks for any help provided

aww hun 🙁 I’m 26 and I have chronic jaw pain and its taken over my life. I know how you feel unfortunately. You will NEVER become addicted if you are using your pain killers for the right reason. I say this because you mentioned you take it for sleep– if pain is keeping you up, take it at bedime, an hour before sleep, but you may also need assistance with sleeping medication as well, or to find out better techniques to help you rest. LIke having a bath/shower before bed (this really helps me)–consistence is important!! Finding relaxation time, using hot packs, I find reading and knowing more about my pain helps, knowing i’m not alone. Eating well and exercise are CRUCIAL and especially KEEPING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE. if you lose the attitude, everything goes into the crapper.

A spine specialist works with people like you all the time– doctors are good, but they are general, they dont specialize in an area and they see it all, Specialists will have a better idea of how to treat you. I encourage it sooner than later!! That’s why I like seeing my chiropractor for my back pains–they are taught about the musculoskeletal system more in depth, its their expertise!

I would highly suggest massage, its really rarely contraindicated. I find heat helps, or ice, depending on the day. I bought a foam roller, some doctors dont like them, ask your physiotherapist if its right for you. Its helped me.

Posture– hows yours? shoulders back, abdomen in. Exercise goes along with this– gotta get your core very strong, especially with your height, (no offense) but tall people tend to slouch sometimes, this is bad for you!

Have you learned lots of stretches from physio? do them all the time, or i can give you lots. Yoga is great, i would highly suggest it. it increases mobility.

Remember–pills may help with pain, but you have to learn to cope with pain and keep going with your life. Even though it hurts, there are things you can do to help reduce the pain… unfortunately sometimes no pain no gain. Take one for the team for it to be better in the long haul.. This is the thing. WHen someone has acute pain, you have pain to tell you to STOP it! its going to do more damage! WIth chronic pain, usualy no damage is being done, but our bodies respond to a stimulus inappropriately, but it doesnt mean we don’t feel the pain. The pain is VERY real. It sucks big time 🙁 I know 🙁 I have it right now. See? thanks for distracting my pain for 10 minutes 🙂 Message me privately if you like we can chat 🙂 Dana
