Why is addiction called a disease?

Question by raechel383: Why is addiction called a disease?
I shop too much, does that mean I have a brain disorder? No – it means I am irresponsible with my spending. What makes addicts or alcoholics any different from me? Please help me understand – this is causing SERIOUS drama in my relationship.
I am mostly curious because my boyfriend is in recovery for crack/cocaine and it almost seems that he uses “disease” as an excuse. I have a difficult time understanding how a self-inflicted situation is a disease.
I guess I kind of see the word “disease” as an excuse to be compulsive, irresponsible, and to not have to exhibit self control. (sorry to offend anyone)

a true physical addiction results in the same destruction to the body as any other disease, thus the reason for calling it that.
