Why does this girl prefer her step-father over her real father?
Her name is Genie. Her parents split when she was 4. Her mother promptly entered a relationship with Dan, a man who abused drugs and physically, sexually and emotionally abused Genie’s mother — to the point of broken bones and police intervention. He made her mother a shell of the person she had once been.
Her father stayed single. He had split custody of Genie. When she was 13, he entered into a relationship with a woman Genie hated.
Genie is now 16, but she would rather live with Dan and her mother than her real father … despite all of Dan’s abuse.
