Why does society have a higher regard for those with a rough past than it does for the life-long good people?

Question by alchemist0750: Why does society have a higher regard for those with a rough past than it does for the life-long good people?
When a person who once had serious issues with alcohol, drugs, crime, and/or abuse is turned around to live a “reborn” life of recovery, we treat him/her as a hero. But for the person who lived a simple, clean life of honor and respect, each is nearly ignored – like a virtual “nobody.” Why does our society hold the “bad guy” in such high esteem?
