Why does noone care that the elderly abuse the younger people?
Question by Stop grandparents rights!: Why does noone care that the elderly abuse the younger people?
Everyone always goes on about elderly abuse and the poor battered old people. Yes it’s wrong, BUT what about the fact that we have to put up with THEIR abuse?
I have a family member that works in a nursing home. Quite a few of the female cooworkers have been fired for defending themselves from an old pervert. A woman was caring for an old man and he groped her (I won’t go into more detail than that.) She was fired for “elderly abuse.”
I just don’t think that people really get the truth all of the time about the elderly abuse cases. Sure there are cases where the elderly are just popping off at the mouth and piss off the staff and it could be because of a condition they have, so no, they don’t deserve abuse. Noone does, but why is it ignored when the people caring for them are abused?
There was a meeting at the nursing home about the issue. A worker asked, “What if they sexually harrass/abuse us?” The response? “Let them. They don’t know what they are doing.”
I personally, don’t believe they all don’t know what they are doing, but even IF they did, I sure as hell wouldn’t expect women to just “let them.”

First, real elderly abuse is wrong and should be dealt with immediately. I use to work in a couple of nursing homes. I have also had family members and friends in nursing homes. I have seen what you are talking about and it is wrong also. I have also been groped by old men, as well as hit, slapped, bit, and kicked by residents and also in home care settings as well. I believe as you do. I feel that we should be able to either walk away and report it, or defend ourselves and not have to worry about being written up or fired. People should not be allowed to get away with harassing or abusing the help in any way, shape, or form. It is wrong too. Yeah, some may not realize what they are doing, but some do! Either way, it is unacceptable. I would like all people who work with the elderly, disabled, or mentally challenged to stand up for our rights and get things changed for the better. What do you say people?
