Why does crack cocaine carry a harsher punishment than methamphetamine, crank, or speed.?

Question by Bryant C: Why does crack cocaine carry a harsher punishment than methamphetamine, crank, or speed.?
I am 41 yrs. old, I first heard of Crank( meth) back in the early eighties, it is widespread now but it was pretty popular in central valley california even back then. Cocaine in rock form, or the crack version, carries a mandatory sentence..far stiffer than either Methamphetamine or powder cocaine.

If you take a person hooked on Crack and a person hooked on Meth..and stood them together, Could you tell them apart?

So why the harsher sentence? one drug is popular with one group and the other is the choice of another group. meth is by far favored by whites, and crack is predominantly a black problem. Yet they both appear to have the same effect on it’s abuser.

Crack came about as a cheaper form of powder cocaine in the early nineties, Meth has been around at least twice as long,at least since I went to high school in ’82.

Either we make laws not really knowing what we intend to accomplish, or we make laws knowing full well what we intend to accomplish.
