Why do some people use “bumber” and others use “bumper”?

Question by Bottom Contributor: Why do some people use “bumber” and others use “bumper”?
I have seen this a number of times on Answers, so it can’t just be a spelling error. Is ‘bumber” a European name for a “bumper”?

I.e., a bumper is used by cars to absorb bumps, not bumbs. Can anyone shed some light here?

It’s just a misinterpretation of “bumper”.

The same thing happens with “laptop” – I constantly hear/see people using the term “labtop”.
