Why do people judge the alcohol dependant so harshly?

Question by Cat: Why do people judge the alcohol dependant so harshly?
Having read a few questions and answers on here about alcohol dependancy and abuse, ive noticed so many people telling these people they are idoits, and to grow up. Do they not know the damage this can do to a persons recovery? Having known and cared for someone with a dependancy, I really feel people should either be more sympathetic or just say nothing at all.

People say harsh things on here because it’s easy to be self-righteous when you’re typing on a computer.

I also think most “people” on her are actually children (i.e. under 18) who don’t have much experience, and thus are convinced that they are experts who should lecture others and call them “idiots.” It makes them feel better about their own insecurities, to act superior.

We humans are a dodgy bunch, but I think that’s to be expected. You can’t really hope for complete sensitivity in a relatively anonymous public forum like this.

It’s cool that you are empathetic. To their credit, I bet even the name-callers, would be much more empathetic if they actually were close to someone with a dependency issue.
