Why do obsessive personalities trade one crux for another?
Question by HELLCRAWLER: Why do obsessive personalities trade one crux for another?
In my few years on this planet I’ve noticed a few things that make little since to me. Surely someone out there can give me an explanation. When people with obsessive personalities that are negatively affected by drugs decide to kick the habit, the rehabilitation phase almost always converts addicts into religious bigots. Alcoholics and drug abusers are the main focus of this question. Can someone explain why this is? I know several people that trade an addiction for religious bigotry! One person I knew in particular gave up alcohol and immediately started obsessing over the bible and other scripture… before I knew it, this guy was judging everyone who didn’t believe in the Christian god!! Why is that? How does the lowest scum of the earth think that by reading a book he suddenly has power to judge others?! It’s NOT JUST ONE PERSON!! I know several people like this! It’s just some junkie trading one addiction for another. What’s your opinion on this?

I disagree. Your assumptions are too all encompassing. You may have had a few experiences which lead you to believe that you have discovered a cause and effect relationship there.
Many addicts do have deep emotional problems which they feel can only be mollified by achieving an altered mental state.
Some eventually turn to religion as a tool to define themselves and their life in a context which gives them comfort and a reason to be.
Of course, my opinion may be just as wrong or right as yours.
