Why do many people compair an affair (infidelity) to an addiction?

Question by Takaris: Why do many people compair an affair (infidelity) to an addiction?
There seems to be a consensus among some that having a relationship with the “Other Woman” or “Other Man” is like alcoholism or a drug addiction. Is this true? I can’t see how its anything compared to a self destructive chemical addiction. Is it just through the glasses of a betrayed spouse or is there something to this? Be honest with me and yourself. 🙂

People can really be addicted to other people.
There have been several books written about it, and pyschologists treat people for it all the time.
