Why do consoles use “matchmaking” instead of servers for online games?
Question by OrangeFox: Why do consoles use “matchmaking” instead of servers for online games?
Just something I notice, for example in the Conduit for Wii and Sonic Rush Adventure on the DS, I have to join a game using matchmacking. There’s no server or game room to choose from, just random players. However on a PC, I can join a server (Quake III, Call of Duty, etc), or join a “game room” (MotoGP, Command & Conquer).
Why does one use matchmaking and the other let’s you choose?

Makes it harder to mod, though people can do it anyway.
