Why cant an alcoholic think rationally?

Question by Diana: Why cant an alcoholic think rationally?
My boyfriend is in recovery for alcohol addiction. Its like he is being taught to think for himself all over again. He is not a stupid man,he has made some bad choices but the program appears to have instilled alot of self doubt in him.
