Sounds like you haven’t known very many addicts. A true addict will seldom be “off” his drug of choice, and when he is he isn’t very pleasant or warm or caring. They become obsessed with scoring some drug supplies and will do almost anything to obtain them.

Actually, addicts are very highly predictable, once you know what their drug is. They will center their lives around obtaining and using this drug. They will lie, cheat, steal, prostitute themselves, etc., all to obtain their supply of drugs. And how they behave when high depends on the drug they are addicted to. Meth freaks and crack heads do get very paranoid and aggressive when high, but many alcoholics or cocaine users do not. Pot heads get very mellow when high. Ecstasy users can be almost anything when high. And PCP users can get very crazy and disoriented.

There is no such thing as “an addict”. Personality interacts with drug of choice, degree of addiction, age, degree of social/moral deterioration, etc.. Even within addict classifications there are sub-groups…like your happy drunks, your sad drunks, and your violent or mean drunks.

There’s lots of stuff written about various kinds of addictions. Maybe you should study up a little, since you obviously are involved with at least one addict of some kind.
