I have been dating this guy off and on for five years.. He’s not the love of my life, but I care about him very much. He’s smart, funny, etc.. but he just has one problem- Heroin. He has done every drug in the book- and it doesn’t make sense because he could have anything he wanted in life. He has a rich family, blah blah blah. He would always lie to me about his addiction until recently, when he finally became clean. He is detoxing off of heroin, and taking the pills he’s supposed to. But I just don’t know what to do. Now I’m just worried sick about him, I haven’t seen him in two days, and that is the last time we talked. He told me that he wants me to be apart of his recovery, but he hasn’t called me or returned my phone calls. He has a great support system, so I know he’s not using, but I just don’t know as to if I should try to get ahold of him, or to leave him alone.

It is kind of you to care about him, but the thing to remember is that no matter what you do or say to help him, the choice to use is his alone. It can be frustrating. My best friend insisted that he liked his lifestyle: drunk and high all the time, living in a sh*tty apartment, and destroying his health. His mother, extended family and friends tried to help him, but in the end he over-dosed on cough syrup and booze. It’s like they are afraid to leave a life style behind. I smoked pot for years, and I swear, a big part of it was that I didn’t want my friends to think I wasn’t “cool” anymore if I quit. They get used to a life style and it is easy to feel better if you want or need to. Also, it is easy to “belong” to a circle of “friends”…all you have to do is use drugs and you’re in like flynn. Let him know that you care about him, and don’t be afraid to confront him. Make sure he knows that it’s because you care that it hurts you to see him do this to himself. But in the end, it will be up to him if he wants to improve his life. It is difficult to see something better when your mind is clouded by chemicals. Good luck to you.
