What should I have said?
Question by jammygal: What should I have said?
Just went for an interview to be an autism support worker, and got asked this question. (Bear in mind that I have no prior experience)
“Some autistic people have very similar behaviours to people who have been abused sexually. How would you be able to tell whether or not an autistic person was being sexually abused.?”
I said I would have to look at the person’s file, and see what those who knew him/her better said about particular behaviours. I also said that I would look for signs of the person talking about sex a lot or talking about things that they should not have had experience of.
I don’t think this was the answer they wanted though.
What would have been a good answer?

This one has me stumped. I’m all about honesty and, frankly, I would have answered it a little differently. i might have said, “I do not know but am ready and willing to take the necessary training to learn. Is this something that everybody who works here is familiar with? And as I apply for the position of austism support worker, isn’t it true that I will be working with the autistic? I am curious as to how the sexually abused behaviors fits in. I would really like to know more about this. ”
Also, it is always appropriate to do your own follow up with a thank you note of sorts. You can highlight yourself, your enthusiam, and desire to answer any questions they may have. And always thank them for their time.
