What machines and purposes do we associate with “sliding cranks”?

Question by fly_u_holder: What machines and purposes do we associate with “sliding cranks”?
We are doing a project for engineering class and the mechanism assigned to my group was a sliding crank. We were wondering if anyone knew what they are usually used for and just stuff like that. We will actually be designing this and creating it.

Sliding cranks are way to convert rotation into a linear reciprocating motion or vice-versa. An excellent example is the piston-cylinder-crankshaft arrangement in all piston engines. Another example would be a door knob. simple twist slides the latch to side and allows the door to open. In this case the rotary motion is converted to linear where as in the engine its the other way around.

Look around and anywhere you see something with a sliding and rotating motion together you’ll prolly find a slider crank mechanism.
