What is the difference in Darvocet and Vicodine in drug tests?
Question by lilmissgringa: What is the difference in Darvocet and Vicodine in drug tests?
I got into a bad car accident at the end of April and my doctor prescribed me Vicodin for my pain. I have carpel tunnel in both hands, lower back pain that goes into both legs and so on and so forth. Anyway, I am in recovery and have been doing really well in the condition that I am in. I don’t like taking the Vicodin often and my best friend has a script for Darvocet, so I switch with her a couple times b/c as far as I know the Darvocet is milder than the vicodin. I am on probation and they gave me a drug test. What do you think that test will show. They know I am on the Vicodin, I know they are both opiates. Do you think it will show a difference though? Thank you!

In a regular urine drug screen, they will test only for opiates in general. Since they know you are on Vicodin, when you test positive for opiates, there will be no problem. There are tests that can tell the difference between opiates, but they are not used by probation officers. I am in a pain clinic, and they give me a random urine drug test which they send to a lab called Ameritox. It can tell exactly what kind of opiates are in my system. They do this so that they know if I am taking other medications than what they prescribe me.
BUT…. you shouldn’t be taking your friend’s medication. If you don’t like taking the Vicodin or don’t need a narcotic pain reliever that is that strong, talk to your doctor and get your own prescription for Darvocet or Tylenol #3 or even Ultram. All are milder than the Vicodin. Just don’t take your friend’s medication. It’s stupid and dangerous to take medication not prescribed to you, not to mention illegal. If you get caught with that Darvocet and it isn’t prescribed to you, that’s a probation violation and you’ll go to jail. Your doctor likely won’t a have a problem giving you something milder for your pain, and you won’t have to worry about what your drug test will show!
