If you have a standard crankset which would have a 130mm bolt circle diameter(BCD), the smallest chainring you can have is a 38 tooth small ring, they are hard to find. For compact rings, you have to change the crank arm to one that has a 110mm BCD. Basically, you need a new crank if you want to use compact rings.
