What are the long term effects of using nasal spray over several years?
Question by iluvmnky84: What are the long term effects of using nasal spray over several years?
I have been using nasal spray since I was 5. I am now 22. I was wondering what the long term effects could end up being. I have read all kinds answers regarding quitting, but what’s the use of quitting if the only effects I can find is that I will just have to use it forever? You know what I mean?

Your parents should be beaten publicly if they put you on nose spray like that at such a young age.
The difficulties of getting off nose sprays after years of use are many and unpleasant. But you NEED to do it. I had a problem for almost a year and I will NEVER touch the stuff again, no matter how bad my nose gets stuffed-up. I got hooked fast and it was hell getting off the stuff.
There are MANY problems associated with the continued use of nose sprays, like chronic nose bleeds and chronic sick sinus symptoms.
Just Google “Nose Spray addiction” and you will find lots and lots of help sights and information.
Good luck!

I’ve also heard from them that nasal sprays contain bad effects. Better yet… you may just want to use ointments, syrups or anything more appropraite than using nasal sprays for a long time. Well, here’s a bit of info below from the net.
Asthma inhalers and nasal sprays that contain steroids are well known to cause psychiatric side effects such as depression, mood swings, aggression, irritability and insomnia. However, in rare cases, they can also cause a side effect called “steroid psychosis”. People with steroid psychosis lose contact with reality and can appear to be crazy or insane. Symptoms of steroid psychosis can involve anything from incoherent babbling to psychotic delusions and hallucinations. The person may need to be hospitalized and treated with anti-psychotic drugs. The condition is usually reversible, although it may take weeks, months, or even longer to resolve. Steroid psychosis is rare with steroid asthma inhalers and nasal sprays (1 in 10,000 chance). However, it is much more common with oral (pills) steroid drugs, such as prednisone.
