What are the long-term effects of snorting pills?

Question by John Doe: What are the long-term effects of snorting pills?
Lets just say “a friend of mine” has had a pill snorting addiction for a couple of years. He’s snorted at least one, and at most 8 pain pills (oxycodone/hydrocodone) almost everyday for the past couple of years. Recently he’s been coughing up thick, weird-tasting mucus the past few months, has developed a moderate cough, and every time he exhales, if he lets all or most the air out of the lungs, it sounds like there’s mucus in his throat and lungs. He can hear and feel it vibrating inside of him. He’s also a “pack-a-day” smoker, although has never experienced any moderate to severe symptoms such as this from smoking. I understand pill addiction is a very bad thing. I also understand snorting pills, or taking them in any other way other than the prescribed method is a very bad thing. I just need to know if these symptoms are from the pill snorting, and what are the long-term effects of snorting pills?

Your “friend” needs to get to a doctor ASAP and a drug counselor right after that. S/he’s in a lot of trouble.
