Weight, doctor, divorce, psychologist, and blood tests?
Question by Bamboodi: Weight, doctor, divorce, psychologist, and blood tests?
How do I get out of this situation?
I have a “petite” frame. I am 17 years old 5’2.
But recently I’ve cut down sweets and have been working out.
My mom told my doctor that she was concerned that I had a problem because she’s has several reasons to believe that I had been throwing up.
The doctor told me that since my last visit I had lost weight and that I could not lose any more or he would send my to a psychologist. He gave me 2 weeks. (Before I was 98 now I was 96.4)
When I came back I weighed 95.8.. He sent to have blood tests done and referred me to a psychologist..
Now, I am in a knot because whatever I tell the doctor, he doesn’t believe.. I am certain I don’t have an eating disorder, and have not thrown up.
And no matter how I tell him that my parents divorce isn’t affecting me, he doesn’t buy it.
Believe me, I don’t feel the least bit affected by it.
My mom is glad I’m “getting help”, and I already had the blood test done, results haven’t come in.
But, my dad is furious.
He says that he will take my iPad away if the blood tests come out bad or if I lose any more weight.. and he wants me to gain 2 lbs.. and to eventually be 100lbs!
Also, he says that if I don’t do those two things, he will take me out of an organization I am in, in which I get to go to Washington by plane.
It’s my dream to travel and get on a plane.. considering we’re not the richest family, it would all be paid for and I would get to live out my dream. (The iPad was a gift)
Also, he doesn’t want me to go to a psychologist. He says it will stay on my record when I apply to any job..
I’m stuck. I don’t want to gain weight because I feel more confident knowing I work out and eat healthy. But I don’t want to give up a vacation or my iPad.
(I don’t have a phone and the iPad is basically my communication to the world.. no facebook either)
I want everyone to just leave me alone. I don’t turn 18 till May.. so I still have to go by my parents rules.. and I want to go to the psychologist so he tells the doctor that there’s nothing wrong with me, but my dad thinks so negatively of it, I just can’t go.
I know my doctor will be mad if I don’t go to a psychologist..
I’m stuck, what do I do? And no, I can’t talk to my parents.. they don’t understand..

Weight – 95 pounds isn’t healthy. Parents are naturally going to wonder what’s making you underweight, and will want doctors to check all the possibilities including an eating disorder. If you don’t have one, you don’t have one.
Doctor – Probably, your blood tests won’t show anything abnormal. If they do drug tests, presumably they’ll find out you aren’t losing weight because you’re smoking meth or whatever. And if there’s some health reason, maybe it will turn up.
Divorce – Of course he doesn’t buy that you’re not affected by divorce. Everyone’s affected by divorce. Even if you don’t feel anything, you’re stressed on some level and it might be decreasing your appetite, or increasing your stress to where you want to exercise more to burn it off.
Psychologist – Going to a psychologist doesn’t go on any record or show up in any job applications. If your dad won’t take you and your doctor referred you, just have your mom take you to your appointment.
If you work out and truly eat healthy, the eating healthy, i.e. eating more healthy calories than you’re eating now, will make you gain weight, you’ll hit 100 pounds, your parents and doctor will stop being scared you’re going to die of anorexia, and you’ll have your iPad and plane trip. If you choose not to do that and your father punishes you, you’ll live.
You actually can talk to your parents. One trick teenagers are good at is playing one parent against the other in a divorce. If you talk to your mom, and leave the iPad with her when you go to your dad’s – I assume they’re separated if they’re divorcing or already divorced – and she doesn’t agree with taking it away, it won’t be taken away. But you’re going to have to convince both parents you accept that your weight isn’t healthy and that you’re trying to eat more and gain weight.
