I agree we have to attack the drug problem from the demand side, however it will be very difficult to do this if you remove punishments for doing drugs. Education is an important tool, as are rehabilitation programs, but these programs only go so far. Creating less punishment and less incentive to not do something is not going to lead to less demand. The simplest way to reduce the demand is to make the cost of something more expensive to obtain. If the cost of doing drugs is the possibility of doing serious jail time, then the cost becomes very high because in general people really really don’t want to go to jail.
