Using Creative Visualization to Overcome Stress
Stress is an unpleasant feeling in itself but it can also trigger additional problems such as tension headaches. There are many methods for relieving stress but some of these just treat the symptom. Creative visualization has the advantage that not can it relieve the stress but it can also solve the problem causing the stress.
The success of creative visualization has been validated by many scientific studies and it is even used to help with medical conditions.
To perform creative visualization you must first relax your mind and body. Either sit in a straight back chair or lie down. Close your eyes and imagine every muscle of your body relaxing from the tips of your toes to the top of your head. While imagining, take slow, deep, even breaths, breathing in and out through your nose with your mouth closed.
Once relaxed, imagine the solution to your problem as having already happened. For instance, if you are stressed due to your workload, imagine that all your jobs are finished and you are relaxed and awaiting a new assignment.
Let your imagination work in great detail. Imagine yourself completing each job and disposing of the completed work. Imagine yourself sitting at your desk with nothing more to do and trying to figure out how you will spend your time. Imagine yourself being complimented by your supervisors on a job well done. The more detail you can incorporate into your visualization, the more real it becomes.
Then compose an affirmation to write. Your affirmation should be worded as though your desire has already been accomplished. For instance, don’t write, “My workload is getting lighter.” Instead write, “All my assignments are completed and I am awaiting new work.” If your problems are financial, don’t write, “My finances are improving.” But write, “I now have all the money I require to take care of my needs and wants.” If while writing, negative thoughts intrude, turn your paper over and write down the negative thought. Then go back to writing the positive sentences. Follow this procedure each time a negative thought occurs.
Now find a place where you will not be disturbed. Relax and read your affirmations out loud to yourself.
During the day, as you go about your business, think of your goal and say your affirmation to yourself. You can do this while performing jobs that don’t require thought such as washing dishes, cleaning the car, taking a shower, etc.
Also, try making a treasure map. Cut pictures out of magazines and paste them up on poster board. If finishing your work is your goal, find pictures of empty desks, people playing etc. If it is finances, look for pictures of banks, money, expensive objects that you can now afford and ones you would like to own.
Every night, just before you retire, look at your collage. Then when you are in bed, think of your desire and say your affirmations. Try to drift off to sleep with your goal in mind and saying your affirmations. This is very important since, for your goal to happen, your sub-conscious mind has to become involved. The best time to activate your subconscious mind is just prior to going to sleep when you are halfway between your conscious awake world and the world of dreams.
