Two Counties Declared Part of “High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area”
Saying Northwest Arkansas is a high intensity drug trafficking area isn’t at all a way of saying the area is a bad place to live. Far from it — in fact the main reason for that designation has to do with the major roads that run through the NWA. I-540, Highway 412, and especially Highway 71 which basically runs from the southern border of the US to the northern border — are often used by criminals to transport drugs from one place to another. But again — the drug trafficking designation is a helpful tool and certainly shouldn’t prompt residents to pack up move to greener pastures. Two counties — Madison and Washington are included in the designation — joining company with about 25 counties nationwide. The 4th Judicial Drug Task Force has applied for federal grant money to help pay costs that have had to be absorbed by law enforcement agencies as the state budget continues to drop — thanks to the poor economy.
