Tramadol and Back Pain – A Question for Doctors?
Question by Michael R: Tramadol and Back Pain – A Question for Doctors?
In high school I was active in gymnastics…I was pretty good and I spent many hours a week practicing. One day, at the end of my senior year, I had a bad accident, and really hurt my upper back. The pain went away after a few days and I never got it checked out. About a year ago, I started to get horrible pain in my back. It turned out I have a few severely herniated discs that never healed. I’m in physical therapy but I’m also going to a pain management clinic. At first I was taking one 10 mg Percocet every 6 hours but I heard so many horror stories about addiction that I asked for something else when I realized I would be on pain medicine for a few months. Now I take two 50 mg Tramadol every six hours. That’s the background.
My question is…on a milligram by milligram basis how does Tramadol compare to Percocet?
I understand they are different medicines but I want to make sure I’m getting the same pain relief as I was before with a lower risk of addiction. And please, I don’t need any answers like “you need help” I’m going to multiple doctors for a bad injury (I can barely walk) and I want to get off these medicines as fast as possible.
I’m in physical therapy….I’m only using this until I can get healed which is taking a while since it’s such an old injury. Like I said, I want to get off any medicines as soon as possible and start exercising and stuff again.

The medicine is just treating the pain, not the cause of the pain. Until you fix the underlying problem, you will always have the pain. Have you seen a chiropractor?
