IJAMSVILLE, MD. — Many 13-year-olds would scoff at recreational writing, but Madelyne Xiao embraces it. The rising Urbana High School freshman has been reading literature since the fifth grade, counting “Roots” and “Lord of the Flies” among her favorite books.
