Pathways Past Poverty Candidate Forum moderated by Center for Public Deliberation Director Martin Carcasson. Question 3: Although the Center for Disease Control ranked Colorado as the healthiest state in the country, in terms of mental health our record is remarkably different. Colorado has the 7th highest rate of suicide in the country, is ranked 31st in per capita spending on mental health treatment (National Alliance on Mental Illness), and is ranked last in per capita spending on substance abuse prevention (National Center on Alcohol and Substance Abuse). The largest inpatient mental health treatment facility in our community has become the county jail, and we are forced to transport individuals to Greeley for detox or acute treatment facilities. What are your thoughts on how Colorado and the county are currently allocating resources to address these issues and what, if anything, would you do to address funding for mental health and substance abuse treatment?
