“Spiritual Aspects of Alcoholism” by Father Joseph C. Martin – The deepest damage of the disease is to the “inner person.” It is far more devastating than the damage to the body in most cases. The Big Book calls alcoholism a “soul-sickness”. Through denial and other behavior, the alcoholic lives against his or her conscience. Step Four calls for a moral inventory. The answer then is spiritual. AA is a set of spiritual principles. The result of living these principles should be serenity, which is nothing more than “PEACE OF CONSCIENCE.”
