Should I quit playing video games(Expanded)?

Question by Question Mark: Should I quit playing video games(Expanded)?
My teacher says video games are a pointless wastes of time that teach you nothing. I’m in college and an adult and I should be able to do what I want to do. I also get good grades and manage my time well. Some people do the same thing as well and can still be successful. I think there is more to gaming than what my teacher has said. She hasn’t played a video game passed Mario so she probably has no idea how advanced they are. But I believe there is a lot of thinking and Strategy to video games and how they aren’t a waste of time. Like Anno 2070 has a cause and effect for everything you do and that game is heavy simulator based. To me saying video games is a waste of time is like saying: chess and darts are a waste and time, or fiction is a waste of time. I just don’t know why people hate video games when they don’t know how far they’ve come and how much of a social experience they are or can be.

Edit: Another funny thing about my teacher is that she says that video games are a waste of time but then on the next day she shows the class a website where you can watch tv and movies all for free even the ones in theaters. So I have been trying to understand this logic of why its normal to watch tv but not to like video games? I also think that video games can become a competitive sport as well. I also think that you can learn something from every kind of video game from Call of Duty to Starcraft II. I think with COD you are actually learning team skills and playing against other players across the world. I am also sure everything was considered a waste of time like in the ancient days: i’m sure reading was considered a waste of time because you could be helping the crops or animals and what not.
Sorry if this is long.

Well, if you really want to take your teacher’s advice, you don’t have to quit video-games forever. Simply limit yourself to them more, and focus more on real life situations.

Still, don’t take everything everyone says too seriously. For some people, you just have to let their opinions go in one ear and out the other.

Best wishes xx

I got really heated up reading this, just BECAUSE this is identical to what I go through as a gamer.

I’m just like you, i’m in college, I manage my time well, and i’m an avid gamer, and yes, I really do hate when people comment about how “games, are a waste of time and teach you nothing, and they can damage your brain through excessive use.”

The part about how playing a game TOO much is probably true, but hey, gaming isn’t easy…people who play CoD, or Tekken don’t just pick up the damn controller and start playing like a pro, or even those bejewled games, or strategy game, they don’t become amazing overnight…

This in my opinion is contributed to the fact that either: The people who are judging you are either someone who is probably within their 30’s or higher, wasn’t born during the time when gaming was at it’s peek, (1990’s, etc) probably started working at an early age, and hasn’t had time within their life to really enjoy the smaller things in life, OR just someone who doesn’t know how to have some damn fun, geez…

Seriously, if you’re the kind of awesome gamer/person that I think you are…please don’t quit playing video games, man. You’re a model invidual, you can find the time to manage life, and still have fun, which alot of people that I know seem to not understand, because look at it this way…

I don’t lie(sometimes), I don’t steal, I don’t drink, I don’t hurt anyone, I don’t cause trouble, and I don’t condone violence, so what the flying f*ck is wrong with gaming, am I right? I’m sure as hell that i would much rather be addicted to gaming than crack cocaine or something degrading like gambling, which doesn’t even compare to what people see gaming as…

Not to mention, that gaming is a culture within itself, not particularly as bad as people have made out being an “Otaku” has been.
We are a different kind of people, and we deserve the same kind of respect as anyone else, the only difference is that we may be smarter than most, and more competitive because you actively use your brain and apply new methods every time you play said game, and you continually learn how to play a game, until you become a pro, or whatever you call a pro, lol.

Honestly, if you stop playing a video game, then it’s like you’re letting a huge part of yourself go, and if you can manage your life…hell I don’t see a reason why I should stop doing what I enjoy, and stop being myself, am I right?

Sorry for typing so much…I just had to share my words cus of how much this sounds like the crap that I hear and go through sometimes…-.-

Have a blast man~ and never quit being who you are! 🙂
