Right to break a lease if there’s a meth lab downstairs?

Question by Ms. M: Right to break a lease if there’s a meth lab downstairs?
My downstairs neighbors are making (or at least doing) meth in their apartment. I’ve talked to the police, who can’t do anything about it other than keep an eye on the place. The apartment managers haven’t done anything about it either, even though unlike the police, they don’t need a warrant to check it out. I’ve made it clear to them that I am very concerned. 3 days later, they still haven’t addressed the issue. My question is, do I have any legal right to break my lease? It seems so unfair that my apartment building is full of tenants that aren’t even aware that they’re being exposed to an extrememly hazardous and toxic situation. I don’t even want to go home because I’m afraid of the building exploding or having the neighbors confront me for reporting them. So is it fair that I have to continue paying rent? It makes me so mad that there are laws to protect the stupid meth addicts from having their privacy invaded, while everyone else’s health and safety is at risk.
Yeah…I wasn’t expecting to live there without paying rent. I just don’t want to live there period. I pay a lot of money every month to live in a “safe” area. Now I don’t feel safe and I don’t even stay at my place anymore. If they don’t get it taken care of, I want to get my stuff out of there before it’s too late!
It’s not that the cops aren’t being helpful or sympathetic. They just can’t legally search their apartment just off of my complaint I guess. But the apartment manager can. Then if they inform the police, it’s enough evidence. Problem is, the apartment managers are taking their sweet time like it’s not that big of a concern.
Well they have about 15 empty porpane tanks laying around on their patio and they don’t have a grill. I can smell the shit and they have their windows and doors all covered up with blankets. There’s 3 of them living in a one bedroom apartment and they literally NEVER leave. Plus I heard them talking about it. Is that enough evidence? And fuck “their rights” they live in an apartment complex. It’s not their property and legally, the landlord can go in their apartment at anytime. heaven forbid they be “inconvenienced.” Lets just let the building blow up, taking everyone with it and in the mean time, we’ll all breath in toxic fumes. That shit causes infertility and cancer in people that don’t even know they’re being exposed to it. Do you think that’s fair “ebosgramma?”

i think you still have to pay rent as long as you live on the premises, but you have the right to leave. if you need proof, make a call to local drug enforcement and explain your situation, and remain anonymous as so no harm can come to you. they don’t have to divulge their source. do the right thing and turn them in, you’ll sleep better
