Recreational Drug Use?
Question by Carrie Anne: Recreational Drug Use?
So, I have always heard the term “recreational Drug users”, which means those users who proclaim not to be “serious addicts”, yet only get high on weekends, or during times when it wont effect them adversely. I would like some some input on this. I am referring to any kind of illegal street drug. Coke, meth, weed, etc. Can you truly be a “recreational user”? Or is that just an addicts way of justifying thier drug use? Dying to hear what you have to say, I have heard this term for years, and cant quite say that I believe it, or I dont. I am somewhere in the middle.

Everyone starts off as ” Recreational Drug Users” here is an example of what happens next….6 friends are getting high together every weekend,
smoking weed, drinking and a little coke here and there.
2 may wind up alcoholics, ( 1 a “Functional Alcoholic”)
2 may wind up hooked on coke & or weed or possibly move on the other drugs
1 may get away totally clean
1 may become a “functional addict” who claims to be a “recreational drug user”
a functional addict appears to have total control, don’t believe it.
We have receptors in our brains that may remain dormant forever unless you introduce something to it that it likes like coke alcohol or nicotine, etc…if it likes it, you will start to crave it and that will be the beginning of addiction. It’s not worth it.

The above poster has the right idea. It’s just the numbers that are off a bit. The actual statistics in the United States is 10% of the population is addicted to a substance not including tobacco, but including alcohol, recreational and prescription drugs. In all honesty, I know there are some recreational drug users. I just never met any. I have only met the people who became addicted and finally make their way into recovery.
