Beautiful, smart, sociable, Laurie had modeled for the Kim Dawson and worked at Dillard’s, an upscale Dallas department store. After graduating University of North Texas, with a degree in education and a minor in marketing, she married into a prominent Denton family and had two sons. While they were growing up, she substitute taught and then opened a successful wholesale business that supplied a chain of stores owned by her family. She divorced after 13 years of marriage. Her meth addiction started a year later. She was 41. “I drank socially in college and didn’t see a problem with it. My husband and I drank socially, sometimes more than we should have, but I wouldn’t say it was my drug of choice. “My best girl friend at the time and I went to Dallas for a weekend to get away from our children and boyfriends. And she said, ‘I have some substance, something I think you might really like. If you don’t, want to try it, it’s okay. I know you don’t do drugs.’ And I did it and was hooked. I loved it from the minute I tried it.”
