My younger brother started using crack cocaine on and off for a few years. He’s been in and out of mental hospitals because since then he hasn’t been himself. They used to say he had mental illness, but don’t know if it was caused by the crack or if he was trying to self medicate. Now, he is off medicine for mental illness but he still isn’t himself. For example, he still talks about hallucinations he had but I think he really believes it happened. Have any of you guys experienced this in your family?? We don’t know what to do with him. Its so sad because he’s so young and has his whole future ahead of him…he’s truly a bright kid. I’m just scared this might be permanent. I don’t know what to do..I love him so much but it’s like he just wants to give up. Any advice? He’s currently not using, but says he thinks about it everyday. Any help??

I used to drink alcoholically and do crack cocaine. I believe I was self-medicating an underlying mental health condition – which for me, was Major Depression and Anxiety. Fortunately, I was led NA and AA – worked the steps and found a Christian Community. My AA sponsor said if it weren’t for my spiritual side and Church, I’d probably be in a mental hospital.

Your brother needs help. But HE has to want it – NA, individual psychotherapy.
