Physical disabilities vs. mental handicap.?

My father lost his leg (above the knee amputation) because of an anti-biotic resistant staph infection (MRSA) he acquired at the hospital when getting a total knee replacement 6 years ago. Losing his leg cost him more than just a limb, he now suffers from severe depression, and diabetes (caused by long-term use of a medicine he was on to fight the staph infection)
It’s hard for him to work because he is constantly in pain and it’s very uncomfortable to sit or stand for long periods of time. We depend on his disability checks to survive, along with his part-time job, and many think he’s “Abusing” the system.
Now, the other side. I know someone whose parents both have “mental handicaps”, her mother is “bi-polar” and her father is schizophrenic. Neither of her parents work, they both get disability money and addition government aid (food stamps, etc, which we don’t get).

Why do the people who apparently abusing the system get more than the people who actually need government aid?
I understand that mental handicaps are pretty disabling, but just because someone is bi-polar doesn’t mean they can’t work: right? Bi-polar disorder is a problem with mood swings, up really high then down so low you cry for no reason. They have medication for it now too that stabilizes your mood.

both are terrible disabilities…and think the physical leads to bad mental health…the system is set up so that people can take advantage and its not so much about the people taking advantage of the system, its the system taking advantage of the people! sorry about your dad, and ur friends parents…i know how hard that is! god bless!
