my brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia…I’m scared.?

Question by Mommy to Max ~*6-11-09*~: my brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia…I’m scared.?
My older brother is 24 and has been using meth/speed for 6 years. For the passed few years he’s been very weird, even when he’s not using. He shows all the signs of being a schizophrenic and he was finally diagnosed with it last week. Well, I just learned that my grandfathers brother is in a mental institution for the same illness, and I have a cousin who is also schizophrenic. I never knew this…so learning I have 3 family members with it really scares me. I’ve been known to be kind of a hypochondriac so I’m so scared I will one day develop this illness.

All I know so far is that schizophrenia is brought on by trauma. So for my brother it could be the drugs, my cousin was in a bad car accident (and he could have been using drugs too, I don’t know him that well but I wouldn’t be surprised), and my grandpas brother I have no idea, but he didn’t get this illness until just recently and he’s in his late 70’s or early 80’s.

So I’m trying to make myself feel better in knowing that this wont happen to me as long as I take care of myself (I’ve never done any drugs of any kind and try to lead a healthy, productive life). But I am dealing with some postpartum depression issues but it’s mostly just anxiety which isn’t helping me with all this.

I don’t know what I’m looking for here…just some info that will help me not worry that I may get this illness?

It has been suggested by some scholars that schizophrenia tends to be more common in males than females. While this may or may not be true, lifestyle can have an impact, and it can be hereditary. It can be quite manageable with medication, depending on the severity. It is possible for someone with the disease to live a relatively normal life. I would not worry too much. Just take care of yourself and try not to worry about something you have no control over. Remain alert, of course (and discuss with your doctor if you have concerns), but don’t let the fear get the best of you. Good luck
