Mailbox Recovery Center In Exchange Server 2003

Sometimes administrator deletes mailboxes by mistake. That mailbox can be recovered if within the retention period, default is 30 days. When any mailbox is deleted, Exchange does not delete those emails from its database for a period of 30 days. It actually hides the mailbox and can be recoverable within its retention period. We can reconnect the orphaned mailboxes to a new user.

Cleanup agent regularly scans all mailboxes and check if there is a connection between a user in Active Directory and a mailbox in the Exchange Information Store. If there is no connection, object is marked for the deletion. Otherwise we can reconnect it to the existing user. Cleanup agent can be run manually from the Exchange System Manager.

Cleanup agent is used to reconnect the deleted mailboxes. After running the cleanup agent, right click on orphaned mailboxes and choose ‘Reconnect’ to connect it to a new user in the Active Directory.
