What are the long term effects of oxycontin and opiates OTHER than addiction? I mean some people are prescribed them indefinitely for back pain, etc., so unlike marijuana and other hard dangerous drugs, opiates are prescribed and given out generously at hospitals for pain. If taken in safe doses regularly, what is the worst that happens, other than addiction?

This is assuming you could afford to keep your habit supplied and money was not an issue, and that you did not overdo it.

The worse thing (other than addiction) that could happen is constipation. ONLY if you take them as prescribed, abstain from alcohol and avoid any medication which could make you drowsy.
