Life on Life’s Terms, at Freedom’s Door, a Poem about Addiction Recovery
Life on Life’s Terms, at Freedom’s Door, a Poem about Addiction Recovery
Living life on life’s terms is accepting life or reality as the way it is and dealing with life and the past as best a person can even though there are many disagreeable events and realities that one wishes were different, and not running and hiding behind drugs or alcohol. It is simple; giving up hope of a better past. Sounds a lot like the Serenity Prayer.
Life on Life’s Terms
The earth has gave me life and strength to endure what I need for me,
Opening my eyes and my heart I came to believe.
Awakening the soul I gave my life to the will of recovery,
I sit, I stand, and I walk with security.
As a day goes on dusk to dawn,
Coming together I found where I belong.
Listening and learning has gave me peace,
Excepting my failures and defeats.
With humility today there are no insecurities,
For when I have truth, thus has serenity.
I can have, I cannot have, all the above,
Simply by saying there is a god I love!
Chasing my feelings I can grow indeed,
I pondered in thought, not sharing my greed.
Materials of man I greatly dismissed,
Blunder I shared and being so careless.
Today I can stay or be gone with the wind that blows by,
To carry my shame would bring me to stay high.
I said to my higher power “I AM DONE”,
Living life on life’s terms that shall be my fun!

Learning to accept life on life’s terms means no longer getting mad and grabbing a bottle or some drugs and disappearing from the scene. Learning that the world did not revolve around oneself; learn about one’s senses of expectations and disappointments and accept the results; move on with life. Keeping cool and keep in check the HUGE rollercoaster of feelings that occur in recovery and know that one “belongs” in this world.
Living life on life’s terms also means no longer disrespecting others and the people who that person loves and who have loved them by being selfish, self-centered, inconsiderate and dishonest.
Being more mature emotionally and no more crying of a sense of victimization. Becoming responsible for one’s own sense of happiness because accepting life on life’s terms means no one’s going to do it for you, and that what other people think of you is NONE of your business.
