Journey Healing Centers Announces 3 Sobriety Success Guidelines for Keeping Resolutions
Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) January 12, 2010
Just when millions are about to break new years resolutions and fall back to their bad habits, Journey Healing Centers (http://journeyrecoverycenters.com) announces 3 Success Guidelines for staying sober that can also work for anyone wanting to give up any addiction. With over 22 million individuals having a substance dependence or abuse problem in the US (SAMHSA), it’s no surprise that getting sober is one the Top 10 Resolutions made.
“Every year our call volume increases about 2 weeks after the New Year with family members asking how to get their loved ones into treatment. It takes about that time for family members and the individual to realize that even though they made the resolution to stop drinking or using, they are unable to do so on their own. We always explain to the family how there is much more going on with addiction than free will. The more positive support from family members, the better chance of success with sobriety.” Aubrey Barrow, Journey Healing Centers Admissions Director
Positive sponsorship for change is urgently needed because the success rate is so low for keeping resolutions. A recent research study shows that while 52% of participants were confident about their new years goals, only 12% actually achieved them. (Quirkology Study that tracked 3,000 people). To help loved ones take control of their lives again, Journey Healing Center’s team developed these 3 Success Guidelines:
3 Success Guidelines for Helping Loved Ones Stay Sober
1. Be a Supportive Sponsor who sets Boundaries
Love is a much better starting point for change versus an ambush of anger with people fighting addictions. Supportive Sponsors can motivate someone to stop drinking or abusing much faster. To help friends and family stay on track, a Supportive Sponsor should set boundaries such as insist on no alcohol allowed at home, and offer to be there anytime they want to talk. Listen in a loving way by not making the person feel guilty if they have setbacks, but instead, help them to figure out why they slipped.
2. Take Family Action to Reinforce Resolution
It can take a team to get someone sober and break a bad habit long-term. And all it takes to get started is a caring conversation to reinforce your support. Tell the addict how much you believe in them and their sobriety. Research treatment options such as AA, Residential Programs, Outpatient Programs, and get their long-term commitment for change. (Journey Healing Centers offers all of these options at their centers in Arizona and Utah).
3. Find a Lifetime Treatment Program to Avoid Relapses
Prevent dangerous relapses by looking for lifetime treatment programs. Journey Healing Centers offers free Aftercare for life to anyone who has gone through their treatment programs as a continuous support system. What this means is that members can go to 2-5 meetings/week at their center for free for life. The families also can attend family programming in Aftercare to support their loved one’s recovery. This extra professional support is a success key for long-term sobriety, along with other alumni activities.
Journey Healing Centers ‘ mission is to support families fighting addictions. Because 43% of adults in the US (76 million people) have had a parent, child, sibling or spouse who is or was an alcoholic, the time is now for Supportive Sponsors for Long-term Change.
