Jail Versus Rehab
Jail Versus Rehab
When dealing with a drug or alcohol addiction you almost always have some legal ramifications to handle as well. This is because in addition to drugs and drug use being illegal, there is an incredible amount of violence, theft, and illegal activity that is associated with drug use.
When someone is addicted to drugs like heroin, crack, alcohol and crystal meth they eventually give up their lives to the drugs, unless they get help before it gets to that point. When a person gives up their lives to a certain drug they end up losing their job, homes, family, friends and any savings they may have prior to the addiction. This means that when the drugs have fully taken over their life, they have to resort to criminal activities to get their next fix.
At the point where they are stealing, lying, manipulating and cheating their driving force are the drugs. You will see them do things that you never thought were possible – more times than not this ends up resulting in legal trouble.
Often times the legal trouble that someone gets into will result in them being sent to prison. This is a seemingly good thing because the family and loved ones do not have to worry about the addict continuing to abuse drugs and alcohol. However, what jail or prison time does not handle is the desire to use drugs.
What ends up happening is that the person is basically suspended. They are not currently abusing drugs or alcohol, but they have every intention on using as soon as they get a chance.
The only real way to handle this is enroll the person in an effective drug and alcohol rehab. This will allow them to fully handle their addiction and figure out what problems drugs and alcohol solved for them in the first place. When this occurs they are able to move forward with their lives, instead of being suspended until the opportunity to use more drugs and alcohol presents itself again.
When dealing with a substance abuse problem the best possible thing to do is enroll the addict in treatment as soon as possible. The only wrong thing to do is nothing at all.
