Here’s the position in support:
1) The so-called drug wars has been a futile effort. The government has made no significant difference in the amount of illicit drugs on the market largely because its the drug runners and dealers who take the heat rather than those at the top who continue to live large by exploiting addiction.
Please feel free to provide documented evidence to dispute this assertion.
2) Criminalizing users has not stopped them using it so why not legalize it so that the state can at least regulate it and ensure that people get the correct drug with all the correct information about its effects.
3) Practically speaking the state could drive the dealers out the market because they have the means to supply it at a lower cost. The proceeds from any sale by the state would of course be pumped into rehabilitation facilities. Furthermore the money we currently waste criminalizing users could also be better used on rehabilitation and drug educations initiatives.
4) There is no evidence to support the claim that it would increase drug related harm in society. In fact alcohol’s prohibition increased the harm associated with it due to the gang activities that surrounded it.

the costs are already being dumped on the rest of us through rehabilitation, criminal prosecutions etc.
In terms of intoxication, obviously it would be just like drink driving.

The cost to society to deal with all the irresponsible people choosing to be high
– driving intoxicated
– not taking care of their professional life, like not going to work
– not taking care of their personal life, like letting their kids suffer
– landing in medical care whose costs get dumped on the rest of us
so, if the cost of all of the above can be placed on the backs of drug users, I have no problem with it.
Also, automatic non-appealable, death penalty for anyone who causes the death of someone else while intoxicated and then I don’t have a problem with legalizing drugs
