Is there a danger that Prozac can be abused?
Question by MikeyG: Is there a danger that Prozac can be abused?
A family member who is an alcoholic/addict, and also suffers from an anxiety disorder and depression. he is currently in outpatient treatment for cocaine and alcohol abuse. The psychiatrist affiliated with the program perscribed him Prozac for the anxiety/depression. My question is, should his mother (with whom he lives) keep hold of the Prozac and make sure he gets the doses, or is abuse of Prozac not a threat, therefore allowing him to keep a hold of it himself?

Since Prozac does not “get you high” or produce any immediate feeling of being high there would be a low risk of abuse. She may want to make sure he is taking it everyday but that’s it. If a drug has a low or no street value it’s unlikely to be addictive.
